IRCT elects new Council 2020-2023

The newly elected IRCT Council

The process reflects a remarkable level of engagement in an important democratic process for any global movement. But it is especially important given the particular stress that member centers have been under during COVID-19 where torture survivors have been disproportionately negatively impacted by being isolated, anxious, cut off from their work, income.  The  IRCT member centers have not only had to pivot rapidly, adjusting staff to move to tele-therapy and virtual rehabilitation protocols but have also prioritized active engagement in this election process.  This is a tribute to the commitment of these civil society organisations to the global movement and to the cause of torture eradication and right to rehabilitation.

"Amid a rapid response for torture survivors disproportionately impacted by the COVID19 pandemic, IRCT member centers took their democratic responsibilities seriously and elected- VIRTUALLY- a new Council.   Talk about ability to pivot and respond to new challenges while taking care of important governance issues at the same time. Bravo!"
