On 3 October 2019, States will elect five members to serve as experts on the UN Committee against Torture. Are you one of them?
The Committee against Torture is the leading UN mechanism that sets standards and examines States on how they are implementing the UN Convention against Torture. It is composed of ten independent experts and five of those seats are up for election in 2019. This is a unique opportunity for anti-torture experts from all professional backgrounds to contribute to the global fight to eradicate torture.
The Committee against Torture is an essential mechanism in the global fight against torture. If it is to perform its role effectively, it needs highly skilled and dedicated members. That is why the IRCT, Amnesty International and the Association for the Prevention of Torture (APT) have issued a global call for identification and nomination of expert candidates.
The call requests all States that have ratified the UN Convention against Torture to identify and nominate experts for the Committee through a transparent, competitive and merit based process. It also established key criteria for membership.
The IRCT urges all of our members and partners to identify suitable experts and promote their nomination with your respective governments.
