Civilians living in Gaza and West Bank are living their worst nightmare. Especially children and teenagers are distraught, witnessing their friends and family’s homes being destroyed by missiles and bombs. The bombing of hospitals, homes and medical centres must stop immediately.
IRCT Secretary General, Lisa Henry, joins the international community on calling on Palestinian armed groups and the State of Israel to immediately stop the escalating conflict in Gaza, the West Bank and Israel. The basic human rights abuses and violations of international law, including the occupation and forced evictions, must end, and the international community must achieve this. Civilians have a right to protection in terms of psycho-social support, medical care and other life-saving support. “We know health centres in Gaza and the West Bank are working day and night to not only take care of their own safety and families, but to provide support to their communities, especially children and youth."
Health professionals have turned into front-line humanitarian responders.
IRCT members in Palestine (Treatment and Rehabilitation Center, Gaza Community Mental Health Programme and Jesoor Transcultural Right) and RESTART in Lebanon, are trained health experts in trauma treatment and are supporting children and youth, talking them through their life’s worst nightmare via online sessions. The health centers are working overtime, providing psycho-social care to children and youth who are desperate to hear a normal voice that can give a glimmer of normalcy and humanity.
